Make Them Look Like a Ninja

If you're holding the target, your job is to make your partner look like a ninja. That's what I tell my students every time we do partner drills.

Not to stand there. Not to check your phone mentally while someone kicks at you. To be at the right spot at the right time, giving them the perfect target, so every rep looks and feels incredible.

Most people think the person kicking is doing the work. They're wrong. The holder is doing just as much. A bad holder ruins the drill — wrong distance, wrong angle, flinching. A great holder makes an average kicker look advanced.

This is a philosophy, not just a drill instruction.

The best training partners make everyone around them better. They don't compete with you during practice. They don't try to show you up. They put the target where you need it and let you shine.

And here's what happens: the people who hold well get held well. It comes back. The room gets better. Everyone levels up together.

The people who hold lazy? Everyone knows. Nobody wants to partner with them. They're training alone in a room full of people.

After sparring the other night, I watched my students — people getting knocked down, partners helping them back up, checking on each other. Control and camaraderie. That's not an accident. That's culture. And culture is built one rep at a time, by people who decided their partner's success matters as much as their own.

So next time you're holding the target, don't just stand there. Make them look like a ninja.

Strength is built, not born.

Key Takeaways

  • Training partners who elevate others get elevated in return
  • Control and camaraderie aren't accidents; they're culture built one rep at a time
